Composer : Johann Sebastian Bach

Genre : Cantata
Comment : Ich will den Kreutzstab gerne tragen
(I will gladly carry the Cross) / / Cantata 56 / / Nineteenth Sunday after
Trinity / Epistle: Ephesians iv. 22-28 (Put on the new man) / Gospel: Matthew ix
1-8 (The sick are healed) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 1* / / The opening
aria of this great solo cantata is one of those wonderful examples of Bach's
music being perfectly at one with the text. For example, in the opening phrase,
the resolution of a dissonant C sharp to D (in g minor) immediately gives the
impression of the enormous burden of the Cross being lifted with God's help. The
cantata goes on, with the familiar metaphor of life as a journey through
troubled lands until salvation is reached in the promised land. Meanwhile a
recitative, complete with "waves" (an allusion to Jesus' boat journey at the
start of the gospel reading) leads on to an aria complete with one of those
wonderful oboe accompaniments that so frequenty decorate the cantatas. I often
wonder whether Bach's oboe player(s) appreciated what he was doing for them! To
me these beautiful weaving, sometimes coy, oboe accompaniments are among the
greatest jewels that Bach has left to us. As a flute player myself, I regret
that the transverse flute wasn't as widely used then as it soon became. If it
had, we could have had a few more of these wonderful tunes to ourselves! Another
recitative leads to the final chorale (Komm, oh tod, du schlafes bruder)
beautifully harmonised by Bach.

Track name : Bach - BWV0057 - Selig ist der Mann -
Solo Cantata in Dialogue (for Soprano & Bass) for 2nd Day of Christmas [St.
Stefanus Day]
Composer : Johann Sebastian Bach
Conductor : Pieter Jan Leusink
Genre : Cantata
Comment : Selig ist der Mann, der die
Anfechtung erduldet (Blessed is the man who endureth temptation) / / Cantata 57
/ / Christmas Monday / Epistle: Acts vi. 8-15; vii. 55-60 (Martyrdom of St.
Stephen) / Gospel: Matthew xxiii. 34-39 (Woe to Jerusalem) or / Luke ii. 15-20
(The shepherds at the manger) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 2 / / This may
seem a rather serious cantata for a Christmas Monday but the explanation lies in
the coincidence with the Feast of St. Stephen (as recounted in the Epistle). The
theme, celebrating Stephen's sacrifice, is a common one in the cantatas and is
told by a common device, that of the dialogue. Jesus recounts the parable, the
soul bemoans earthly suffering, Jesus opens His arms to the soul, the soul
realises paradise through release from this Earth. The end. The cantata
therefore breaks into two parts, before and after redemption and Bach represents
this in the music. Before the central recitative duet which provides the pivot
point, the arias are slow and serious and after they are much more up beat. Of
these, the opening bass aria is perhaps the best. The following soprano aria has
an attractive orchestral introduction and the voice part moves along in a style
reminiscent of the Agnus Dei from the b-minor Mass. After the turn, the bass
aria is a lively affair and the final soprano aria equally so with a florid
violin accompaniment. The cantata closes with a straightforward setting of a
chorale melody that you will almost certainly recognise!

Comment : Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid (Ah
God, how many a heart-pang) / / Cantata 58 / / Sunday after the Circumcision /
Epistle: Titus ii. 11-14 (Salvation hath appeared to all men) or / Titus iii.
4-7 (Justified by grace, we are heirs of eternal life) / Gospel: Matthew ii. 13
-15 (The flight into Egypt) or / Matthew iii. 13-17 (Jesus baptized by John) /
/ SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 1+ / / This little gem is a perfect
introduction to the dialogue form of cantata. One voice is full of the sadness
of this world, the other full of the message of the consolation of Jesus'
sacrifice for us. Each voice represents an aspect of a single soul. Over the
course of the cantata the voice of consolation wins over the voice of sadness to
joyful resignation and anticipation of the world to come. In the opening duet,
the soprano sings the opening verse of a hymn by Martin Moller (Ach Gott, wie
manches herzeleid) whilst the bass sings consolation, paraphrasing the (second)
Epistle. The short string introduction to the opening duet demonstrates the
sheer power of Bach to write music that defines a highly charged emotional
atmosphere. The following recitative is an outstanding narration of the Gospel
story of the flight into Egypt. In the solo soprano aria, accompanied by a
flowing violin figure, the soul starts to come to terms with its fate and after
another recitative, the cantata is ended with a duet (with a form similar to
that of the first verse) of outstanding joy and energy.

Rating: 3 / / You may think me somewhat harsh in relegating this tiny cantata
to the lowest rating. After all, the opening chorus is quite a pleasant piece
with a chamber music feel to it. But, it must be so, since there is so little
material here (around ten minutes with opening chorus, recitative, chorale and
bass aria) and the substantial parts were re-used to much better effect in BWV
74. So, pass over this cantata and go straight to BWV 74.

Comment : O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort (Oh
eternity, thou thunder-word) / / Cantata 60 / / Twenty-fourth Sunday after
Trinity / Epistle: Colossians i. 9-14 (Prayer for the increase of grace) /
Gospel: Matthew ix. 18-26 (Raising Jairus's daughter) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: /
Rating: 1* / / This cantata is one of those miniature gems that few seem to
know about but once discovered, it is never to be forgotten! There are two duets
and two lengthy recitatives finished off with a chorale. In total perhaps
fifteen minutes of music, one third the length of the most substantial cantatas.
But what quality! / / The whole cantata is a duet between Fear (alto) and Hope
(tenor) (there is little relationship to the bible readings of the day). The
start of the opening duet immediately lets you know that we're in for something
special: The oboi d'amore's cascading chase after the thudding, rising strings
and continuo provides one of the best introductions in all the cantatas! This
accompaniment continues over the beautiful duet between alto and tenor. The
first of the two recitatives has a wonderful extended phrase to the word
tortures. The second duet perhaps doesn't provide the musical contrast that the
words would seem to require but is still very beautiful. Then a long and very
effective recitative leads into the most astonishing of all the chorales: Es ist
genung. Alec Robertson puts it as well as anyone: "…the remarkable harmonisation
of the first two bars still has the power to startle, the chromatic harmonies
six bars before the end, to amaze". Alban Berg uses this chorale in the final
movement of his beautiful violin concerto. I find something about Berg's
quotation deeply strange, spooky even, which I can only express by an analogy in
my own field: A famous mathematician remarked that the occurrence of a recent
discovery was as if some twenty-second century mathematics had dropped through a
timewarp into the twentieth. It's as if Alban Berg's chorale harmonisation had
dropped back into the eighteenth century for Bach to use!
